Life in the Aughts

As I discuss on my blog over at shanerhyne.com, a list just published by the Webby Awards featuring the ten most influential internet moments of the past decade has made me curious about how rapidly our work places have evolved. I'd like to write a more thorough overview on the topic of how the c… Continue

Testing My New Blog

I'm up late tonight test driving my new personal web site and blog at shanerhyne.com. If anyone here would like to stop over and help me kick the tires, I'd appreciate any comments you might have. Continue

Catching Up

I feel like a bad social media-ite lately. I've kept myself busy at work, but haven't really been doing much to keep my various other social media projects updated. I'm way behind on uploading photos to Flickr, I haven't posted a new blog entry at No Silence Here in days, my long-planned new personal blog is still mostly in the planning stages, and I haven't up… Continue

New Job News - Self-tooting horn edition

Hello, September has been a busy and happy month for me. So busy in fact, that I see I have failed to officially update everyone here on my big news. As today's media release confirms, I have joined Ackermann PR's digital communications team . I started working here as Katie Granju's assistant on a part-time basis at the beginning of the month and was delighted when Cathy Ackerm… Continue

Political Campaigns Will Ignore New Technology at Their Own Peril

Frank Cagle offers some observations on the growing role of digital media in local political campaigns in this week's Metropulse. Some choice quotes: * "The days when a political campaign could ignore the new technologies are over. And a candidate who doesn’t 'get it' is laboring under a handicap." * "Content is king. And during this gubernatorial race, we will take the content where we findContinue

Politically Connected Updates

A recap of some posts from the past week as part of the Politically Connected series exploring how the internet is being used in the 2009 city council elections. * Candidates launch new web sites, Facebook pages and blogs. * Knox County Election Commission puts candidate… Continue

Some Shout-outs for the Politically Connected series

Georgianna Vines included a mention of my "Politically Connected" series today in her KNS column. I forgot to mention that Michael Silence had included a reference to it in one of his Sunday print columns a couple of weeks ago. I mention them here because, in both cases, the printed art… Continue

Is Knoxville More "Social" on Social Media than Other Locations?

I was listening to Michael Silence, Glenn Reynolds, and Jack Lail yesterday on George Korda's talk show on WNOX. I ended up calling the show in a failed attempt to win free food, but ende… Continue

Politically Connected

I've posted a follow-up on No Silence Here about the Knoxville City Council candidates and their planned use of social media in the upcoming campaigns. I'm thinking of calling the planned series, "Politically Connected." What do you think? For a quick update, there are now two new candidate web sites up (Bates and… Continue

Social Media in the Knoxville City Council Elections

Following on the heels of the 2008 election and the wide coverage of the use of social media during those campaigns, I was curious to see what, if any, effect the social media trend would play on local elections. This summer provides me with an ideal opportunity to study that topic up close as the city of Knoxville's 2009 campaign season for five city council seats started today. I wrote the first post in what I hope is a series of articles about the local campaigns and how they will be using (… Continue

A New Knox Blogger - Dwight Van de Vate

Racing on Twitter for Customer Loyalty

I blogging on No Silence Here today about a cool use of Twitter I've been enjoying over the weekend. A NASCAR team (sponsored by East Tennessee's Little Debbie snack cakes) is providing fans with live updates during the race. On the face of it, it's nothing groundbreaking. Lots of folks have given live Tweet updates of special events and sporting events before. But it did make me wonder why you don't see… Continue

Return to Blogging

I officially started yesterday as the new co-blogger at No Silence Here. So far, I'm mostly just getting my blogging legs under me. My old blog (Tennessee Values Authority) was really more about longer essays, so I'm trying to get accustomed to the shorter style that Michael uses. However, he hasn't suggested that I shorten my posts-- he does remind me that pixels are free. But, I'd like to get in the habit of writing shorter posts anyway. If you'd like, feel free to drop by sometime at… Continue

Wading Back Into the Blogging Pool

Some of you who've known me for a while know that I used to host a blog under the pseudonym "Tennessee Values Authority." I had to give it up for a while as real life intervened on too many fronts. I was always grateful that several bloggers, most notably R. Neal of Knoxviews and Michael Silence of No Silence Here, were always complimenting my writing and encouraging me to get back into the… Continue
